There was a plane to catch, so the Los Gatos cross country team had to skip the awards ceremony following the Mt. Sac Invitational in Los Angeles back on Oct. 20.

And that was a pity... because the Wildcats had quite a bit of hardware to pick up.

Los Gatos had three runners finish in the top 10 on the way to winning the team title at the prestigious invitational.

"This was the largest and the biggest invitational win in Los Gatos history," said Gatos coach Willie Harmatz after the team victory.

And the Cats won it in impressive fashion. Senior sensation Russ Martin finished second overall in a school record 15:27 on the 3-mile course. His effort helped Los Gatos post a team time school record.

"That was his best race ever," said Harmatz of Martin. "He looked strong the entire race."

But it was more than just a great performance by Martin that led the Cats to the title. Six Los Gatos runners recorded personal bests on the day.

"What a tremendous overall team effort," said Harmatz. "It was very exciting to watch."

Tomas Viramontes nailed fourth in 15:32 with Matt Bates fifth in 15:42 for the Wildcats.

"I've never seen [Viramontes] so focused in my life," said Harmatz. "Nothing was holding him back in this race."

Harmatz called Bates' effort "a fantastic PR. His consistency this season is his best ever."

Darren Key was 22nd in 16:28 with Greg Tolan 26th in 16:36 and Jeff Hoeft 37th in 17:06--all personal bests. Clay McKell finished 83rd overall in 17:48, also a PR.

Los Gatos ran up a low 59 points to win the team title at Mt. Sac. Corcoran was a distant second at 72 with Norwalk third at 106.

The Gatos girls, meanwhile, competed in a workout race at Crystal Springs, site of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League finals on Oct. 31.

Michelle Beritzhoff ran 19:04 on the 3-mile course to finish third overall with Lynsey Harris 12th in 20:58, Erica Williams and Jen Rubnitz both running 22:03 to tie for 23rd, and Ashley Caldwell 29th in 22:12.

Shannon Kehrig was fifth in the girls junior varsity race in 22:58.
