Ben Winkelman is a Heisman candidate
Most football fans are aware that the Heisman Trophy is presented each year to the outstanding college football player in the nation.
But high school athletes compete for a Heisman award, too. And Ben Winkelman of Los Gatos is in the running for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award.
The award, established in 1994 by Wendy's Restaurants, honors top senior scholar-citizen-athletes across the country who have achieved excellence in academics, community involvement and athletics. This year, more than 12,000 athletes nationwide have been nominated for the prestigious award.
The field will be narrowed to 102 state finalists (including the District of Columbia) and then to 12 national finalists before national winners are announced in December.
