Los Gatos Weekly-TimesCats, Vikings play for field hockey titleBy Dick Sparrer Juli Fomenko buried four goals in two matches for the Los Gatos girls field hockey team last week. But the first three weren't nearly as important as the fourth. Fomenko scored three goals in a win over Leigh to open the week for the Wildcats, and her teammates matched her effort in the 6-1 victory over the Longhorns. Later in the week, though, it was Fomenko's lone goal that helped the Cats pull out a tight 1-1 tie with Mitty in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. Fomenko knocked in a first-half goal and the Monarchs matched it to leave the two clubs tied 1-1 at intermission. And that's how it would remain as the clubs battled through a scoreless second half. The tie left the Cats 6-0-2 in the division and 13-1-2 for the year. Los Gatos had opened the week with the lopsided win over Leigh. Fomenko had three goals and three assists to lead the Cats to the victory. Cortney Kelly supported with a goal and an assist for the winners. Alison Carabetta and Anita Reyes also scored goals for the Cats and Iming Lin added an assist. The Wildcats remain undefeated in the division, but the tie dropped them to second place behind Lynbrook. The Vikings whipped Leigh 6-0 and edged Prospect 1-0 last week to improve to 7-0-1. The Cats and Vikes will meet this week to determine the division championship. Los Gatos will visit Lynbrook on Nov. 4, 2:45 p.m. The winner will all but wrap up the title. Netters fall The Los Gatos girls tennis team lost 7-0 to St. Francis last week in a De Anza Division match. Gatos wins a pair The Los Gatos girls volleyball team won two matches last week, taking Palo Alto 15-9, 15-5, 15-7 and beating Milpitas 15-3, 15-2, 15-7. The Wildcats are 6-3 in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL and 18-8 for the year.
