The Los Gatos Lightning and Bobcats may be as different as night and day--after all, they are girls and boys.
But they had something in common this past fall: They each made it to tournament championship games.
The Bobcats, a boys' under-12 competitive team in the Los Gatos United Soccer League, won the title in the Golden Gate Invitational Tournament.
The Lightning, a girls' under-12 competitive team in the same league, finished second in the West Valley Youth Soccer League Tournament.
In other Los Gatos United Soccer League action, the Elks upset the Badgers 4-1 to improve to 5-3-1 for the year in boys' under-12 recreational play. The loss was the first of the year for the Badgers, who slipped to 8-1.
Tommy Morrissey's first-half goal helped the Elks to a 1-1 draw by intermission. Patrick Lynch scored two goals in the second half to break the tie, and Ryan Daily also scored for the Elks.
Sweeper Adam Hudson and midfielder Kyle Schafer also played well for the winners. Ed Cheung tended goal for the second half and blanked the Badgers.
The Badgers had edged the Pintos 1-0 a week earlier. Geoff Hubbard scored off a Nima Rahimi assist for the game's only goal.
Victor Larsson and Drew Fong were other top offensive players for the Badgers and Alex Kehriotis, Cort Roberts and Brendon Franklin were defensive standouts.
Two goals by Anthony Burks and a goal and an assist by Hubbard sparked the Badgers to a 3-0 win over the Bulls. Fong and Derek Doyle also had assists and Adam Nelson and Matt Herrick played well.
