It hasn't been the sort of season the Los Gatos girls' volleyball team has grown accustomed to.
But it won't be a losing year--the Wildcats made sure of that last week by beating a pair of foes in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
The Wildcats beat both Palo Alto and Monta Vista, and they did so in easy fashion with three-game sweeps in each of the two wins.
The Cats, led by Julie Yick, Chiara Grabill and Kari McMorrow, turned back Paly 15-7, 15-10, 15-3 to open the week, then finished things off with a 15-4, 15-7, 15-6 win over Monta Vista.
The two victories left the Wildcats 6-4 in the De Anza with two matches remaining in the regular season. The Cats are 12-8 overall this fall.
Girls' Tennis
The Los Gatos girls' tennis team suffered through a pair of losses last week to slip to 5-8 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
The Wildcats were blanked 7-0 by St. Francis before losing a tough 4-3 nod to Homestead.
Robyn Levine nailed a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles and Monica Cohn won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles, but the Cats lost to the Mustangs. Joanna Sickler and Tina Chang teamed for a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles.
Over in the Blossom Valley Athletic League, Leigh's Stephanie Smith finished third in the Mt. Hamilton Division singles tournament.
Smith won her way into the semifinals before lost 6-3, 6-1 to a Leland foe. She came back to beat Presentation's Jennifer Chung 7-5, 6-3 in the match for third place.
Field Hockey
Anne Fomenko drilled two goals and Barbara Bellanca added one to lead the Gatos girls' field hockey team to a tight 3-2 win over Los Altos in league play last week.
The Cats and Eagles matched goals in the first half, but Gatos outscored Los Altos 2-1 in the second half to pull out the win.
The Wildcats are now 6-1 in league play.
Girls' Water Polo
Rachel Stratton poured in four goals and Lisa Cristol added two, but the Los Gatos girls' water polo team dropped a tough 9-7 decision to Gunn in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League play last week.
Joy Patterson also scored a goal to round out the scoring for the Wildcats, who could never overcome a 4-1 first-quarter deficit.
