'Prize Patrol' brings surprise

Los Gatos Christian School teacher Leslie May got the shock of a lifetime when a "prize patrol" with the 1998 Intel Applying Computer to Education program barged into a school assembly and showered her with gifts.

May, along with Miriam Shellberg from Prospect High School, was recognized for developing a "Going Back to the Future" lesson plan during Intel's Applying Computers to Education summer institute.

Shellberg and May developed a lesson that helps primary and high school students collaborate on projects. The three-week lesson plan allows high school seniors and third graders to send "About Me" emails to each other. The seniors use information on their third-grade email buddy to design a children's book.

For their efforts, Shellberg and May each received classroom computer equipment and software valued at over $46,000.
