Los Gatos Weekly-TimesThe ProwlerThe jury's still out on whether it's unlucky for a black cat to cross one's path, although no doubt readers can guess this feline's opinion. If, however--speaking of Halloween motifs--the question involves the luckiest place to load up loot bags, the Prowler definitely knows the answer: Tait Avenue! According to Valerie Hopkins, who lives on the long and apparently generous street, she and her neighbors treated many hundreds of tricksters on All Hallow's Eve. One family, Hopkins says, turned out their light at only 7:45 p.m. because they'd already gone through 1,000 pieces of candy. Hopkins estimates she and her hubby gave out about 850 goodies before they finally ran out--and this was after a special trip en medias res to the store to buy more candy! The neighbors aren't sure what magical lure their quiet, tree-lined street holds on Halloween, but Hopkins guesses that good news must travel fast. After seeing so much garb on fright night, Hopkins proclaimed that the Scream costume--a shrieking ghoul based on the mask worn by the murderer in the Scream movies--was the most popular disguise. Computers and M&Ms were also in vogue, she says, along with the usual faeries, ghosts, witches and the like. With both surprise and relief, Hopkins laughs that at least no Bill Clinton & Monica Lewinsky couples came knocking on her door! Although not a fan of head coverings, the Prowler feels very hat-in-hand (or paw) for the accidental omission of the date of Icelandic Crest Horse Ranch's open house in last week's column. The event takes place Nov. 14 and 15 from 1 to 4 p.m. both days. Call 353-8170 for info or directions.
