Wildcats win field hockey crown

It's rather difficult to say.

Is the offense better than the defense, or the defense better than the offense on the girls' field hockey team at Los Gatos?

But it's a difficulty head coach Henry Reyes is happy to deal with.

Because both the offense and defense are outstanding this fall. Good enough, in fact, to help Los Gatos to a championship in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Los Gatos edged Leland 2-1 and blanked Los Altos 3-0 last week to improve to 9-1 in the division (15-1-1 for the year), and that's good for another league championship for the Wildcats.

Kathryn Breed pumped in two goals and dished off an assist to lead the Cats to the 3-0 win over the Eagles. But it was the performance of the defense that was the real difference in the game.

With goalie Jenny Hintz leading the way, Los Gatos recorded its ninth shutout in 17 games this fall. Seniors Jessica Moeller and Erin Peebles, junior Courtney Radonich and sophomore Zoe Segnitz have been other defensive stars for the Cats.

Cortney Kelly added a goal in the win over Los Altos, and Anita Reyes, Erin Robinson and Juli Fomenko also had assists.

Robinson had a goal and an assist, and Fomenko scored a goal to lift the Cats to a tight 2-1 win over Leland earlier in the week. Reyes also had an assist in the win.

Liz Pegram is the Gatos scoring leader this season with 16 goals, and Fomenko has popped in 12.

Robinson and Breed have combined for 13 goals and 22 assists to lead Gatos in the midfield. Robinson led the squad with 15 assists, Fomenko and Reyes have nine apiece and Breed has eight.

The division title was just one of two claimed by the Los Gatos field hockey program this fall. The Gatos junior varsity finished the league season with a 9-1 record to claim the division championship. The Cats were 15-2 for the year.
