Los Gatos Weekly-TimesThe ProwlerWhile prowling past the Los Gatos Museum on Tait Avenue, this cat remembered a pretty hot exhibit. Artists Bruni Sablan and Mark Gray--fixtures of the Old Town Gallery--as well as Michael Linstrom, have works adorning the museum's walls through the end of November. A museum guest-book signer who wrote "a color riot!" must have had Bruni's "Ladies of Jazz" series in mind--probably burned into his or her mind! The Prowler was wowed by the artist's command of color, juicy brushstrokes and ability to paint the passionate expressions of these singers, songwriters and musicians who loved what they did as much as Bruni obviously loves what she does. Among the jazz greats are Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and Eartha Kitt, along with two of Bruni's favorites from her native Brazil: Flora Purim and Maysa. Mark's Sports Originals line shows the triumphs and tribulations of sports figures, including those in football, hockey, tennis and cycling. This cat was surprised to see animals included as well--a bull angrily eying a matador in one work, four galloping wild horses in another. The fact that Gray once studied under Bruni is evident in his style of bold, splashy colors and impassioned brushstrokes. For something completely different, check out the modest paintings by Linstrom, a Bay Area artist and art teacher for 20 years. His series of what he calls Bristol Oils is made up of neatly matted rectangles and squares with simple, abstract shapes, splotches and zigzags in bright colors. They offer an interesting contrast to Bruni and Mark, at least in this cat's eyes. For museum hours, call 354-2646.
