Los Gatos Weekly-TimesNews BriefsWork begins on substation After winning a year-long fight to build the Vasona Substation on Winchester Boulevard, PG&E started construction Nov. 16. PG&E will build one transformer on the site, and leave room for a second one some time in the future. The new transformer will be quieter and smaller than previous designs, PG&E spokesperson Scott Blakey said. The station will be monitored remotely 24 hours a day, and will include a high-tech security system. PG&E is working with the town on landscape screening and walls for the site. Work should be finished by spring, Blakey said. Anti-spraying group meeting County residents upset about herbicide spraying along mountain roads near Lexington Reservoir are gearing up for another round of talks with county officials. The group, GAToS, or Group Against Toxic Spraying, is made up of about 60 mountain residents who want a permanent end to spraying without passing on the costs to residents in the form of an assessment district. Members of the group meet with District 1 Supervisor Don Gage on Dec. 1. The county started using the herbicide Garlon 4 about a year and a half ago. Green Valley Food Drive Green Valley Recycling sponsors its annual canned food drive from Dec. 7 through 11. Canned goods should be placed in clearly marked bags next to their curbside recycling bins on their collection days. Green Valley will deliver the food to the Second Harvest Food Bank. Donations should not go out until the morning of pickup.
