Los Gatos Weekly-TimesVikes, Dons want to be home for the holidaysBy Dick Sparrer Tomas Andalon and Dan Fife knocked in second-half goals to send the De Anza Community College men's soccer team home for the holidays. But that's certainly not a bad thing for the Dons. Because De Anza's Cupertino home is where the state soccer championships will be played over Thanksgiving weekend. The Dons knocked off Hartnell 2-0 last weekend to win a spot in the state semi-finals Nov. 28 at De Anza. The Dons will face Santa Ana at 2 p.m. following an 11 a.m. game between West Valley and Santa Barbara. The Vikings earned a semi-final berth with a 2-0 win over Cañada last Saturday. The winners of the two semi games this Saturday will move to West Valley College in Saratoga for the state championship game on Nov. 29, 2 p.m. The state women's championship game will be played at 11 a.m. the same day at West Valley. De Anza lost in its bid for a spot in the semifinals last week, falling 3-0 to Ohlone. The Dons had beaten Butte 2-0 in overtime a game earlier. The De Anza men, 19-3-1 overall this season, battled from behind to beat Hartnell last weekend. The Dons trailed 1-0 at the half, but Andalon tied it with a goal in the second half, then Fife broke the tie when he scored off a Mitch Guerra assist. The defending state champion Dons will be chasing their third state crown in five years. De Anza won the men's state title in 1994 and again in 1997.
