Recreation Dept. plans day care facility at Blossom Hill

By Shari Kaplan

The Los Gatos-Saratoga Department of Community Education and Recreation's plan to construct a daycare facility at Blossom Hill School is under way, and Los Gatos Union School District trustees are expected to take action on a land lease agreement at the Dec. 11 board meeting.

According to district business manager Mike Brandy, the district has met twice with the project's architect and reviewed preliminary plans with Blossom Hill Principal Sue Russ and with Home and School Club officers.

The current plans are to place the approximately 2,400-square-foot modular facility next to the kindergarten play yard; the site was chosen for its roominess, relatively easy access and its proximity to the play yard, which daycare children may use when the kindergartners do not.

Brandy explained at the board's Nov. 13 meeting that the 24-page lease stipulates the Recreation Department will construct the facility at its own expense. The district will then pay the costs of utilities and the Recreation Department will pay for all internal and external maintenance and upkeep.

The proposed lease's term is 14 years, which coincides with the depreciated life of the building. If the Recreation Department and district agree after that time, the lease may be renewed; otherwise, ownership of the facility reverts to the district.

Modular daycare buildings have been in use for several years at Van Meter and Daves Avenue schools. One or more schools in the Saratoga Union School District are also scheduled to receive modular buildings from the Recreation Department.
