Highway 17 commute eased
Anyone who drives Highway 17 got traffic relief this month just in time for the holidays.
Road crews added a third northbound lane, just north of the Route 85 interchange, the Santa Clara County Traffic Authority announced Nov. 18.
A third lane in the other direction opened last month. The new lanes and 700 feet of road on the northbound shoulder are part of a ramp-improvement project at the Highway 17--Route 85 interchange, funded by the 1984 Measure A program.
County cracks down on deadbeat dads
The county Office of the District Attorney announced a "public awareness campaign" Nov. 15 that drives home its message about delinquent child-support payments.
Fifty buses and 13 billboards will carry a black-and-white poster saying, "It's a Crime Not to Support Your Children--George Kennedy, District Attorney, Santa Clara County--We're Not Kidding." The poster also has a number for delinquent parents to call and set up a payment schedule to avoid prosecution: 922-1700.
Kennedy has added 15 employees to the division that prosecutes non-paying parents. The county is currently investigating more than 100 nonsupport cases. The culprits could get three years in a state prison if their kids are younger than 14, or a year in jail if they're older.
Council studies housing element of general plan
When the Town Council convenes in a Dec. 9 work session to discuss a new version of the general plan housing element, the focus is likely to be affordable housing.
The state wants Los Gatos to come up with more low-cost homes for sale or rent. Town officials hope to convince the state that the programs currently in place will meet Los Gatos's future needs for affordable housing.
The session will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Council Chambers, 110 E. Main St.
