Camerata California plays for a St. Luke's evensong
By Shari Kaplan
Camerata California, an early music ensemble, performs a 45-minute concert of seasonal vocal and instrumental music, following the 4 p.m. evensong service on Dec. 3, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 20 University Ave. in Los Gatos.
The South Bay-based group was invited back to St. Luke's in response to audience enthusiasm after its March performance. The upcoming concert features 14th-century sacred music in Latin and English, honoring the Virgin Mary; 15th-century German festive songs and dances; and the 16th-century "Christmas Cry" of London that incorporates the calls of street vendors of the time. The performers will also talk about their music and instruments between the musical numbers.
Camerata California was formed three years ago by Dr. Vernon Read--a former professor of early music at San Jose State University, along with Mary Anne James, Lettie Smith, Jennifer Randolph, Mike Megas and Ted Lorraine. Among the instruments they play are the recorder, krummhorn, psaltery, guitar, chimes and percussion.
Evensong is a musical rendition of the evening prayer service and includes the singing of hymns, psalms, canticles and prayers. It can also include a short sermon, depending on the season and officiating priest. Following the approximately 25-minute service is the featured concert.
Everyone is welcome at evensong. There is no charge for the concerts, but a freewill offering will be accepted. For more information, call 408.354.2195.
