    The Prowler

The winter months are rapidly approaching, and for some of the Prowler's friends--namely those not lucky enough to have homes of their own--that means chilly nights, damp fur and shivery whiskers. To that end, the Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley is holding its annual blanket and towel drive during December.

"Living in a shelter environment is not easy, so the warmth and comfort of a blanket to snuggle up with on cold nights means a great deal to these homeless animals," says the nonprofit group's Leslie Baikie, one of this cat's favorite animal-lovers. Anyone who wishes to donate new or gently used blankets or fluffy towels can bring them to 2530 Lafayette St. in Santa Clara. For more information about the Humane Society, call 408.727.3383 ext. 854.

Speaking of warm comforts, the family that runs Byington Winery invites the community to join them for their 9th annual Holiday Open House on Dec. 5 from noon to 4 p.m. Wine-tasting and Yuletide diversions are free; piping-hot seasonal soups in sourdough bread bowls are $5.95 each. While in the Santa Cruz Mountains, be sure to visit the many neighboring Christmas tree farms! To RSVP or for directions, call 408.354.1111 ext. 212.

Bluegrass fans shouldn't miss a concert featuring Dudley Connell and Don Rigsby with Missy Raines on Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. at the Los Gatos Unitarian Fellowship, 15980 Blossom Hill Road. The Prowler hears that Connell, of Seldom Scene and the Johnson Mountain Boys, and Rigsby, of the Lonesome River Band and J.D. Crowe & The New South, are among the most renowned singers on the bluegrass circuit. Tickets are $17 in advance and $20 at the door. Call 650.691.9982 for info.
