Student awarded money for international studies
The University of Mississippi awarded student Douglas Penner, a Los Gatos High School graduate, one of 12 scholarships to major in international studies at the university. The Croft Scholarship awards recipients $32,000 for four years.
Penner, who plans a career in international business, ran for the varsity track team at Los Gatos High School and volunteered 225 hours at Good Samaritan Hospital between 1998 and 2000. He spent summer 1998 studying in Switzerland and summer 1999 at the American University of Paris.
Penner, the son of Dr. Dennis and Jocelyn Penner, plans to join the Peace Corps and live and work in either Lisbon, Portugal, or Paris following graduation.
The University of Mississippi began awarding Croft Scholarships in 1998, when it founded the Croft Institute for International Studies. The university awards students the scholarships for excellent academic performance in high school and for demonstrating potential for success.
