    The Prowler

The Town of Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce's Beautification Committee is again encouraging businesses to decorate their storefronts with lights and other festive seasonal decor. The shop with the prettiest "holiday face" earns a prize! The Beautification Committee will also be viewing residences to see which homes have best captured the holiday spirit; there's a prize at stake here too! The judging period is Dec. 3-15. To learn more, call 408.354.9300.

Another one of the committee's projects is the dedication of benches and trees in downtown, on trails or in parks. The cost to have a bench installed and dedicated in honor or memory of someone--including a plaque--ranges from $600 to $1,400, depending on style. Trees are available for a minimum of $50, with a variety of species from which to choose. For more info, call the parks department at 408.399.5777 or the town clerk's office at 408.354.6834.

And now for a horse of a different color--or perhaps the Prowler should say bird! The other week, the Los Gatos Weekly-Times office got "flocked"--its landscaping was overrun by a swarm of pink plastic flamingoes for two days.

It wasn't a prank, but part of a fundraiser by the Los Gatos High School Wildcat marching band and Colorguard. The students are collecting dough to finance their March 2002 trip to Dublin, Ireland, where they've been invited to perform in that city's annual St. Patrick's Day parade. For a $35 tax-deductible donation, folks can have the band "flock" any home located in Los Gatos--a great practical joke for a great cause! For all the dirt, call 408.356.9525.
