Hillbrook appeal set for Dec. 18

The town council will hear the second appeal on Hillbrook School's conditional use permit and master plan on Dec. 18.

The school's actual building plans have drawn little attention, but long-running traffic issues have pitted two neighborhoods against each other and the school. Residents on Marchmont Avenue--the main access to the school--say Hillbrook has not done enough to address traffic issues. Residents of Ann Arbor Drive--another potential access to the campus--have railed against the idea of opening up a gate at their end of the campus.

The planning commission approved Hillbrook's application a second time on Oct. 25, adding conditions requiring Hillbrook to open the Ann Arbor Drive gate to pedestrians and bicyclists. Believing they were prohibited by state law, the commission stopped short of requiring Hillbrook to adopt a car pool plan. Since that ruling, the town traffic engineer has stated that his original recommendation was wrong, and the town could force Hillbrook to adopt a car pool plan.

Water quality officials warn of pollution

As the rainy season gets under way, so does the peak time for water pollution, according to the West Valley Clean Water Program, which serves Saratoga, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno and Campbell.

Pollutants from cars accumulate on roads throughout the year, and runoff from the winter rains wash the pollutants into storm drains.

To help with this problem, the West Valley Clean Water Program suggests maintaining cars regularly, placing drip pans under cars , considering low emissions vehicles when in the market for a new car and driving less.
