John Smart
Longtime Los Gatan John "Johnny" Davison Smart on died on Nov. 2, at the age of 92.
Smart was born on May 29, 1908, in Soochow, China, the son of Methodist missionaries. The family later moved to Berkeley, where Smart graduated from Berkeley High School in 1926. After attending Central Methodist College in Missouri, Smart returned to California, where he attended and graduated from UC-Berkeley in 1931.
A resident of Los Gatos for more than 50 years, Smart was an insurance agent most of his working life. He retired from his own agency in 1992. Smart also found time to be involved in many organizations, including the Los Gatos Lions Club, Los Gatos United Methodist Church, the Los Gatos Library Board, the Los Gatos Athletic Association, the Los Gatos Parks Commission, the former Los Gatos-Saratoga chapter of the American Red Cross, Garden City Chorus and Friends of Soochow University.
He was also the 1988 Grand Marshall of the annual Los Gatos Children's Christmas and Holiday Parade.
Survivors include sister Elizabeth Culver of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; sister-in-law Lillian Smart of Palo Alto; nephews Richard, Edwin, David and Eugene Culver; and cousins Jack and Mary Kazanjian of Gilroy, Robert Davison of Vista, Robert and Frances Jones of Truckee, Thomas Wilson of Tiburon, and Tony and Judy Hendrickson of Saratoga.

Mary Ann Montesano
Mary Ann Montesano of Los Gatos died on Oct. 20, at the age of 69.
Born Jan. 27, 1931, in Greensboro, N.C., Montesano earned a degree in nursing from St. Xavier College in Chicago, Ill.
She worked as a nurse for 45 years, including 30 years at O'Connor Hospital in San Jose, where she did volunteer work, as well. She also served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary's Church in Los Gatos and with Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County.
Survivors include husband Daniel Montesano of Los Gatos; sons and daughters-in-law Michael and Sherri Montesano of Chicago, Ill., and Anthony and Coleen Montesano of San Jose; sons Steven Montesano of Santa Cruz, Martin Montesano of San Diego and James "Rocky" Montesano of Los Gatos; daughters and sons-in-law Susan and James Wunderlich of Atlanta, Ga., Nancy and Jay Kidd of Los Altos and Lou and Tim Dunne of Ventura; 16 grandchildren; sisters Theresa Canna of Chicago and Helen W. Feeney of Baltimore; and brothers Philip and Frank Feeney of Greensboro, N.C.
