Bauman, Fisher girls run to championships

The future looks bright for boys' and girls' cross country in Los Gatos--and for more reasons than one. Not only did the Wildcats complete successful seasons at the high school level with teams featuring talented freshman and sophomore runners, but the middle school didn't look too bad, either!

Fisher wrapped up an outstanding year with one individual runner winning league and county title and one team winning a league championship and finishing second in the county.

Sixth grader Brandon Bauman romped to a league championship and backed that up by winning the county title for the Trojans in a race at Santa Teresa Park.

Bauman ran 14:06 to win the county crown with Miller's Jason Yah a distant second at 14:22.

Doug Mosher was fifth in the league meet and sixth in the county for the Trojans. Ryan Olson ran sixth in league for the Fisher sixth-graders.

While Bauman was running to an individual title at the league finals, the Fisher eighth-grade girls were winning a team championship.

Carolyn Penner, Marin Clark and Erica Williams finished two-three-four to lead the Trojans to the team title at the league meet. Laura Davis was sixth at the league finals with Rachel Colloff seventh.

Penner came back with a third-place finish in 14:45 to lead the Fisher girls to a team second at the county meet. Clark was seventh with Williams 10th, Colloff 11th and Davis 12th.

In other divisions, Allison Williams finished sixth in the league finals but came back with an impressive fourth at the county meet in girls' sixth-grade competition.

In seventh-grade action, Devin Triantos finished fifth in the boys' division at the league meet, and Ashley Lester was sixth in league and 13th in the county in girls' competition.

Other top local finishers at the county meet included Union's Ryan Jensen, Ben Hancock, Kyle Millerick and Brittany Hall.

Jensen was first in the boys' eighth-grade division at 12:06 with Hancock second at 12:33. Millerick was second in the boys' seventh-grade race in 13:05 and Hall was third in the girls' sixth-grade division in 15:55.

Fisher Wrestling

The Fisher wrestling team pinned a second-place finish at the South Valley Tiger Classic recently, beating defending county champ Martin Murphy of Morgan Hill 57-41 and Ocala of San Jose 57-43 before losing to South Valley Junior High of Gilroy 55-40.

Seventh-grader Kevin Cho and eighth-grader Matt Nudelman were Fisher wrestlers named to the all-tournament team. Cho, at 92 pounds, and Nudelman, at 87, each posted 3-0 records in the tourney.

Cho came through with the most impressive win of the tournament, upsetting defending county champ J. Watson of Ocala 5-4. Watson had won 24 straight matches before suffering the loss.

Seventh-grader Bobby Pease and eighth-graders Scott Drew, Cameron Fee, Eric Brown and Zach Damron won two matches each for Fisher in the tournament.

In league action, Fisher ran its team win string to 26 with victories over Redwood (71-15) and Campbell (45-42) to open the year.
