The Prowler

One needn't be a fan of green eggs and ham to appreciate Dr. Seuss. For decades, the late Theodore Seuss Geisel has made kids and adults--not to mention literate cats--laugh while learning lessons from his books filled with rhymes and whimsical illustrations. Now those same images are for sale!

On Dec. 11, from 5 to 9 p.m., the Virtual Gallery at 105 N. Santa Cruz Ave. hosts a reception for its new exhibit of illustrations and seriographs taken from Dr. Seuss' private archives. According to gallery director Mary McCarthy, Dr. Seuss' art makes up of some of the top-selling artwork worldwide. The gallery is also holding a contest for students in grades one through eight; Youngsters are invited to draw their favorite Dr. Seuss character on 12-by-16 paper and bring the drawing to the gallery. Prizes include Dr. Seuss book sets and stuffed animals. For more info, call 354-3456.

Speaking of youngsters, the Prowler discovered some local businesses are helping make the holidays brighter for disadvantaged children and families in the Bay Area. These places are hosts to Family Giving Trees, whose branches are decorated with colorful wish cards. Patrons and employees choose a card, buy and wrap the indicated gift and bring it back to the tree for pick up by the FGT's volunteer "elves."

These holiday-spirited venues in Los Gatos are Bank of the West, Columbia Good Samaritan Hospital, Glendale Federal Bank, Posh Bagel, both Wells Fargo banks and Whole Foods. The nonprofit, San Jose-based FGT, now in its ninth year, can always use more elves, hosts and supplies. Visit them at www.familygivingtree.org for more information, or call 274-3224.
