Cats host annual Shootout

By Dick Sparrer

Leigh won't be there, but the other regulars will return this week when the Los Gatos Lions Club Wildcat Shootout makes its 14th appearance at the high school gym.

The Longhorns had a scheduling conflict so chose not to return to the shootout this year, but Soquel moves in to replace Leigh and join Willow Glen, Armijo, host Los Gatos and the others in the eight-team field.

The tourney tips off on Dec. 10, 6 p.m., when Pioneer and Saratoga collide. Los Gatos then hosts Leland at 7:30 p.m.

A night later, Soquel faces Armijo at 6 p.m. and Willow Glen and Live Oak collide at 7:30 p.m.

"[Willow Glen] looks really good," said Los Gatos coach Jim Marino of the Rams, who beat the Cats last Friday night in the finals of the Westmont Tournament. "And Armijo [of Fairfield] is experienced with three starters returning."

The two clubs rank as the favorites in their bracket in the tourney, and Gatos figures to be the top contender in the other bracket.

Tournament play continues on Dec. 12, with loser's games at 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. and winner's games at 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The final round is set for Saturday, with the consolation championship game at 4:30 p.m., the third-place game at 6 p.m. and the championship game at 7:30 p.m.

The daily admission fee is $4 for adults and $2 for students.
