Helen Canaday
Los Gatos resident Helen Elmore Canaday died of a stroke on Nov. 1, in a Lancaster nursing home. She was 102.
Born Nov. 11, 1897, in Chicago, Ill., Canaday and her family--which would eventually include five siblings--moved to Ogden, Utah, in 1900. Some 17 years later, Canaday's father gave up his medical practice and the family moved to Berkeley, where he took up beekeeping and honey-making. The whole family helped him.
Canaday earned a bachelor's degree from UC-Berkeley in 1921, and began a teaching career that spanned nearly 20 years. Her favorite subjects were English, language arts, social studies and music in both elementary and high schools. After her 1958 retirement, she transcribed children's books into braille and was a volunteer teacher of English to foreign-born adults.
Canaday and her first husband L. Albert Elmore lived in Berkeley for most of their 43 years of marriage. Elmore died in 1967. In 1973, Canaday and her second husband Cary K. Canaday moved to Los Gatos, where they were active members of the Presbyterian Church of Los Gatos. The couple had been married 13 years upon Cary Canaday's death. Helen Canaday lived in her own Los Gatos home until two weeks before her death.
Her children say their mother was proud to have lived in three different centuries and that her great love was living with people. Canaday once wrote: "Life has been rich and fulfilling because of so many contacts with other human beings as I tried to understand us creatures and to relate to all in a harmonious, understanding way ... ."
Survivors include daughter Celia C. Elmore of Palmdale; sons and daughters-in-law Merrit and Marion Elmore of Santa Rosa and Dana and Marjorie Elmore of San Jose; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sister Dorothy Horn of Farmington, N.M., and numerous nieces and nephews.
