Gingerseed houses: strictly for the birds

Christine Blakely of the Wild Bird Center of Los Gatos helps five-year-old Molly Macierz make a "gingerseed house" during a store workshop last week. These edible abodes consist of cut seedblocks glued together with peanut butter. Other ingredients include matzo roofs, sunflower seed shingles, ice-cream-cone chimneys and suet snow. Los Gatan Pat Lemke, who makes gingerbread houses for humans, came up with the idea of making them for birds and passed it on to the Wild Bird Center. Gingerseed house kits are also available.
