Los Gatos Weekly-TimesSoccer team wins a pairBy Dick SparrerChris Cavanagh was a force on the field for the Los Gatos football team this past fall. And, as it turns out, he's not too bad on the soccer field, either. The senior midfielder knocked in a first-half goal to help the Wildcats to a 2-1 nonleague win over James Lick last week. Cavanagh and senior midfielder Ed Simmons each scored goals for the Cats against the Comets. Simmons assisted Cavanagh on the game's first goal, then scored the second off an assist from John Gize. The Wildcats scored two goals to Lick's one in the first half, then held off the Comets in a scoreless second half to clinch the win. Los Gatos, now 2-1-2 for the year, had opened the week with a tight 2-1 win over Mitty. Junior forward Rory Quick and senior midfielder Zack Knipe each scored goals off assists from senior Jed Martin. The Wildcats battled to a pair of ties in the Homestead Christmas Cup tournament. The Cats fought Leland to a scoreless tie, and battled Fremont to a 1-1 draw. The lone goal for Gatos was scored by Simmons off a Peter Hoffman assist. Gatos girls win Marcia Wallis passed out three assists to help the Los Gatos girls soccer team to a 4-1 win over Harbor in nonleague play last week. Amie Salfen, Sunny Vizzusi and Lynsie Adams each scored off assists from Wallis, and Stacy Caro knocked in an unassisted goal in the Los Gatos victory. Gatos girls lose While the soccer team was winning last week, the Los Gatos girls' basketball team was dropping a 46-25 nonleague decision to Westmont. The Wildcats fell behind 14-4 in the first period and were down by 15 at the half. They matched Westmont's 11 points in the third quarter, but could never make up the difference in the game. Trina Mills led all Gatos scorers with eight points. Nancy Shishido added six points. Gatos opened the year with a 46-39 win over Oak Grove. Shishido tossed in 12 points, and Mills added 10. Erin Cushing and Shannon Hart chipped in with five points apiece, and Gillian Waddas added four. The Cats, now 3-2, posted a 2-1 record in the Mt. Pleasant Tournament to clinch a second-place finish. Gatos opened with a 57-41 win over Santa Teresa and beat Saratoga 42-31 to move into the tourney title game. The Cats lost 42-26 to host Mt. Pleasant in the finals. Shishido and Mills popped 16 points each in the win over the Saints to open the tourney. Mills came back with 14 points, and Shishido had 13, including a pair of threes, in the second-round win over the Falcons. But no Gatos player could score in double digits in the 16-point loss to the Cardinals in the finals. Mills, Cushing and Kristin Ozawa had six points each for the Cats.
