The Prowler

During the holidays, the Prowler's thoughts always turn to those animals who are less fortunate, less healthy or less loved. If this cat's readers feel likewise, read on to find out about two--among many--ways to make a difference in a furry friend's life.

The Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley has begun a drive to collect bedding materials for the stray or abandoned dogs and cats for whom it provides lodgings until they are adopted. Although this cat has never spent time in a shelter, the Prowler has friends who have and can attest to how frightening the experience can be. Having a warm, fluffy blanket or towel to curl up on, hide under and generally call your own makes a big difference! Donations can be dropped off at the facilities at 2530 Lafayette St. in Santa Clara. For more info, call 727-3383 ext. 854.

The Pet Network, a nonprofit dog and cat rescue and placement service headquartered in Saratoga, could also use some help. Along with volunteers, "foster parents" and donations of food and supplies--which are always welcome--the network has some special wishes to fill this holiday season.

Three of the dogs have been waiting a long time for new homes. Buster is a highly exuberant 112-year-old American Staffordshire/bull terrier mix; Amber is an affectionate 1-year-old German Shepherd; and Jacques is a 5-year-old apricot poodle recovering from cataract surgery who loves to be cuddled. These critters and many others are eager to meet prospective adopters both at the group's pet fairs and on its Web site, which includes photos and biographies. Visit them at www.petnetwk.org or call 450-2452.
