Pease pins fourth at rugged Coast Classic
By Dick Sparrer
Andrew Pease found himself in some pretty tough competition when he competed in the Coast Classic in Santa Cruz last weekend.
But the Los Gatos wrestler proved to be as tough as the rest by walking off with a solid finish at the rugged event. Pease placed fourth at 145 pounds to lead the Wildcats to a 15th-place team finish at the Classic.
The Gatos standout had already won twice in dual match competition to lead the Wildcats to back-to-back wins to open the 2000-01 campaign.
Los Gatos started the year with a 43-15 win over Overfelt, then came right back with a 40-25 victory over Bellarmine to get off to a 2-0 start in the young season.
The Cats won seven of the first nine matches on the road to the lopsided win over the Bells.
David Miguel got the Wildcats off to a solid start when he pinned with a minute remaining in his match at 103 pounds.
Matthew Nudelman followed with a first-round pin at 112 pounds and James Pease won 8-2 at 119.
After a loss at 125, Adam Morganthaler came through with a pin in the final seconds of his match at 130 pounds, and Brian Miguel pulled out a 14-5 victory at 135.
Gatos lost at 140, but A. Pease won his match at 145 and David Serwitz backed that up with a victory at 152, winning by fall in the second round.
Richard Escobar capped the day for the Wildcats with a second-round pin at 171.
Los Gatos had won nine of the 14 matches contested a week earlier in the convincing victory over the Royals.
D. Miguel, Nudelman and Morganthaler posted decisions for wins in three in the first four matches.
B. Miguel won on a technical fall 18-3 at 135 pounds, and A. Pease at 145, Serwitz at 152, Jerry Yuhara at 16, Escobar at 171 and Chris Smith at 189 each won by decision.
