Council appoints seven commissioners
Town Council members appointed four volunteers to the Community Services Commission, reappointed two parking commissioners and and replaced one Trails & Bikeways commissioner who resigned.
The council chose Joe Young from a field of three applicants to replace Carol Ann Weber on the Trails & Bikeways Committee. Weber resigned from the committee in April, after a tiff with then-mayor Randy Attaway, but her term doesn't end until Jan. 31, 1998. Young served on a similar committee in the Dallas area. He's been a championship bicycle racer, racing coach, and a bicycle mechanic and salesman over the course of three decades.
Three of the Community Services commissioners were reappointed: Jack Neal, Annette Seaborn and Sara Werp. Gary Ehlert, the only person to apply for a seat John Wiley stepped down from early, has lived in Los Gatos 18 years. He manages a 100-member trade association of sheet metal and air conditioning contractors.
Kurt Lemons and Steve Zientek were reappointed to the Parking Commission.
Homeowners must cut their weeds
The Central Fire District notified 1,628 homeowners--many of them Los Gatans--that they must clear their land of combustible weeds and brush, or the the district will do the work and charge them.
Cities annually declare unkempt properties a nuisance and contract with the fire district to plough weeds and trim trees. The fire district will add charges to a landowner's property assessment bill if it does the work. Charges for plowing weeds range from $98 to $192, depending on the size of a parcel. Mowing and debris removal cost $112 per hour.
Fire district subcontractors won't begin the work until March 15, 1997.
Homeowners should: keep brush, vegetation and stacked firewood at least 30 feet from a structure; trim trees back to 10 feet from chimneys; clear leaves from rooftops; clear vegetation from beneath decks.
