A panel of women journalists will discuss how editors decide what stories to cover and how they evaluate newsworthiness. They'll address the role of technology in enhancing the quality of life, too.
The panelists who will address these and related issues Jan. 8 are Dale Bryant, managing editor of five community newspapers and editor of the Los Gatos Weekly-Times; Carolyn Leal, editor of the Saratoga News; and Janet Rae-Dupree, technology writer for the San Jose Mercury News.
They will speak at the monthly meeting of the Los Gatos-Saratoga branch of the American Association of University Women at 7 p.m. at the Saratoga Adult Day Care Center, 19655 Allendale Ave., Saratoga.
Bryant has been editor of the Los Gatos Weekly-Times for the past 312 years. She was recently named managing editor of the five community newspapers published by Metro Newspapers in Los Gatos, Saratoga, Willow Glen Cupertino, and Sunnyvale. Her previous journalism experience includes serving as communications director for United Way of Santa Clara County and as a reporter for theSan Jose Mercury News. She also has done freelance writing and public relations.
Leal has been a community newspaper editor for over 20 years. She previously was editor of the Cupertino Courier, the Sunnyvale Sun and the Los Gatos Weekly. She also worked for the Santa Cruz Sentinel as editor of that paper's living section.
Rae-Dupree has worked for the San Jose Mercury News for the past four years. Her special interest is writing about new technology, which may bring dramatic changes in lifestyles. Her career includes 412 years with the Los Angeles Times, covering municipal news.
