    The Prowler

Being a semi-wild sort of cat, the Prowler enjoys spending as much time outdoors as possible. Plus, it's much healthier than sitting at a computer all day! With these thoughts in mind, here are some upcoming events for folks who are of the same mind.

Parents and children who like learning about nature together should sign up now for the Winter Vacation Adventure sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Los Gatos. Held on Jan. 4, with different times for different ages, the gatherings take place at the Oka Ponds, near the intersection of Oka Road and Mozart Avenue.

Kids can discover what the birds who haven't flown south are doing this time of year. Be sure to wear warm clothes and old shoes! Binoculars aren't necessary, but add to the fun of bird-spotting. Cost is $5 per child; heavy rain brings the activities inside to 792 Blossom Hill Road. Call 408.358.WILD to learn more.

For adventuresome adults, the nonprofit Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is planning a Jan. 19 hike to Mount El Sombroso, the high point of Sierra Azul, an open space preserve in our Los Gatos back yard. The 10-mile hike wends its way through woods and rocky areas and is led by two experienced docents. It's an all-day affair, so bring a bag lunch and plenty of fluids. For information on where to meet, or to sign up, call 650.691.1200 or visit www.openspace.org on the Internet.

Just enough room to mention one more (albeit non-outdoors) event! Eclectic Los Gatos artist Lisa Dale Miller is holding three tarot card classes this January at Inner Journey, 222 N. Santa Cruz Ave. Miller's a very interesting lady; the classes should be likewise. Call 408.206.2518.
