Computer equipment needs highly rated surge protectors

The recent blackout in San Francisco brings to mind an experience a few of my neighbors and I had some months ago. Suddenly, on a quiet afternoon, our electric lights began to flicker and slowly the power faded. After the power was restored I had lost all the electrical appliances, TV, VCRs, computer and printers--that in spite of the fact that I had a surge protector which I thought would protect my computer equipment in case of a power surge.

I consulted an electrical contractor who informed me my surge protector's rating was too low. The remedy was to install an industrial-grade surge protector by the electrical meter, and for further protection, I could have a more highly rated surge protector connected directly to my computer equipment.

I took this advice. I wish to share with the readers of this newspaper my experience with a power surge I thought would never happen to me, so they may take the necessary precautions.

Rebecca Herr worked tirelessly on AIDS Quilt

I would like to thank the Los Gatos Weekly-Times and writer Mary Ann Cook, who wrote the Dec. 19 cover story on the AIDS Quilt. As volunteer coordinator for this project, I spoke with well over 100 people, young and old, who helped as monitors for the quilt.

It was truly a community- sponsored event, both touching and heartfelt on everyone's part. There is one person whose name has not been mentioned who made it all possible. That person is Rebecca Herr. As event coordinator, Rebecca worked tirelessly for months, organizing and recruiting.

During the week the quilt was on display at Los Gatos High School, Rebecca put in many 14-plus-hour days ensuring the safety of these precious panels. The organizing of the dedication ceremony for Jeff Yontz and the closing ceremony with Lois and Peter Raap helped us all identify with this insidious killer. I want to thank you, Rebecca, for all that you did to bring the AIDS Quilt to Los Gatos. It could not have happened without you.

Tom Campbell ignores wishes of 15th District

We the people--in this case the voters in Congressional District 15-- tell our elected congressman--55 per cent to 45 percent--that we are against impeachment. He who claims to be our representative, then disregards our dictates and announces in favor of impeachment.

What more blatant example can we find of the despicable condition of the government of the people as it exists today?

It's our own fault, I know. We vote for the prettiest face or the name we have heard most. And these pretty, popular politicians run roughshod over our wishes.

Tom Campbell, you will never again receive my vote! And I guess I had better examine how intelligently I have made my choices in the past, and operate differently next time.
