Baseball Sign-ups

Sign-ups are still being accepted for the 1998 Los Gatos Pony (ages 13-14) and Colt (15-16) baseball seasons.

Openings remain in the Pony division, but there are a limited number of roster positions still available. As sign-ups increase, players will be placed on waiting lists. For more information, call 358-1478.

Colt baseball will return to Los Gatos this summer. The league will field a number of teams that will play against other teams in the district. For more information, call 354-4170.

The league is also looking for volunteer coaches and managers for both the Pony and Colt divisions. For more information, call 358-1478.

Community College Best

Dion Rayford had quite a season in the defensive line for the West Valley Community College football team. And the state's community college coaches certainly noticed.

Because Rayford, a defensive end from Los Gatos, was picked to the All-State Region II squad as a sophomore for the Vikings.

His selection to the team came after he was picked as one of a dozen Vikings to the All-Coast Conference team.

Rayford, a 6-foot-4, 246-pounder, was named to the all-conference defensive team along with defensive backs Karriem Adams and Neal Maddox (San Jose), linebacker Halona Coleman and lineman Josh Morrow (Pioneer) of West Valley.

Vikings named to the offensive squad included quarterback Lemuel Adams, running back Chad Purcell (Monta Vista), wide receiver Jason Belligan, punter Brian Schweitzerhof (Saratoga), and linemen Duke Vaiga and Joel Tautuaa.

Six De Anza Community College players earned All-Coast Conference honors, including quarterback Mike Lueckeman.
