'Drawer Boy' will kick off the San Jose Rep's season
By Dale Bryant
For anyone thinking that summer is beginning to drag, it's good news that the San Jose Repertory Theatre's 2002-03 season kicks off on Labor Day weekend, with the West Coast premiere of Michael Healey's Drawer Boy Aug. 31.

A discussion about the play, featuring Associate Artistic Director John McCluggage and a special guest artist, is set for Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. at the theater, 101 Paseo de San Antonio in San Jose. Admission is free, but reservations are recommended by calling 408.367.7255.

The season's six scheduled plays run the emotional gamut, from William Shakespeare's light-hearted Two Gentlemen of Verona to Tennessee Williams' raw Orpheus Descending, starring Mary McDonnell.

Healey's Drawer Boy tells the story of two Canadian farmers whose lives are disrupted in ways both strange and wonderful by a young actor who comes to research farm life for a play he's writing.

On Oct. 19, the San Jose Rep stages the world premiere of Philip Kan Gotanda's The Wind Cries Mary, set in San Francisco in 1968, when Asian Americans were first finding their political voice. The play is based loosely on Ibsen's Hedda Gabler.

The season also includes Cultural Clash, a trio that's toured the country for 14 years observing and commenting on life in America. The performance at the Rep will include a new segment on life in San Jose. Eric Bogosian's Humpty Dumpty is billed as a contemporary psychological thriller about two couples who take a break to a mountain retreat, taking with them their cell phones and laptops, designer wines and caviar.

Season tickets are available in a variety of packages, and single tickets go on sale Aug. 15. Call the box office at 408.367.7255 or order online at www.sjrep.com.
