| A tale of tragedy, redemption in Cupertino |
 |
| By Estelle Pagnoux |
 |
Romance and jealousy, paranoia and
sacrifice - familiar Shakespearean themes come
into play in The Winter's Tale, and
the drama promises to heat up the stage this
summer as the city of Cupertino teams up with
the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival to
present the seventh season of Free
Shakespeare in Memorial Park.
Paul Barry directs this production, which
promises a distinctively Bay Area twist to a
tale marked by tragedy and comedy. This
version of The Winter's Tale features
a diverse cast, original music, singing,
dancing and settings that reflect its Bay
Area backdrop.
Jealous love ignites an epic adventure
involving two kingdoms and two countries and
turns tragic misunderstanding into comic
redemption. The show has played parks in
Oakland and Pleasanton and will end its tour
in San Francisco on Sept. 29.
Free Shakespeare in the Park 2002 will
perform "The Winter's Tale" in Memorial Park,
located at the intersection of Stevens Creek
Boulevard and Mary Avenue in Cupertino.
Performances are Fridays, Saturdays and
Sundays at 7:30 p.m. August 16, 17, 18, 23,
24 and 25. For additional information, call
the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival at
800.978.7529 or visit www.sfshakes.org.
