Irish countryside gets dark
By Jim Aquino
British satirist Martin McDonagh has unearthed more than just old graveyard skeletons in his 1997 dark comedy A Skull in Connemara, which will open San Jose Stage Company's 20th anniversary season.

In Connemara, McDonagh also unearths the gritty side of rural Irish life, shattering stereotypes in the process. The play--the second chapter in McDonagh's trilogy of plays set in the sleepy little Irish town of Leenane--centers on gravedigger Mick Dowd (Kevin Blackton), who must dig up the bones of his deceased wife, who perished seven years before in a drunken-driving accident caused by Mick. The dig sparks suspicions about Mick's wife's death--did Mick intentionally off her?

James Reese, who directs this production of Connemara, was also at the helm of last year's Stage Company production of The Beauty Queen of Leenane, the first installment in McDonagh's trilogy. The Stage Company also plans to produce McDonagh's third and final Leenane chapter, 1997's The Lonesome West.

Connemara will open Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. and continue until Oct. 27 at the San Jose Stage Company, 490 S. First St., San Jose. Special preview nights will take place Oct. 2, Oct. 3 and Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $16$36. For more information, call 408.283.7142 or visit www.sanjosestage.com.
