Los Gatan takes science honors
Los Gatos resident Joseph Dickerson, an eighth-grader at St. Mary's Catholic School, took first prize in the Santa Clara County Science Fair this summer. Dickerson then went on to win a thirdplace award in zoology in the California State Science Fair for his project on snails, titled "Snail Trails: The Effect of Environment on the Color of a Snail's Shell."
Dickerson had noticed a white snail and wondered why its coloring was different from most snails he had previously seen. With the help of Neil Fahy of the California Academy of Sciences, Dickerson determined that soil affects the strength of snail shells but not their color. He discovered that white snails are actually a different species than the normal garden variety.
