The Prowler
This week's column is all about animals, which should come as no surprise to those who know the Prowler's penchant for fellow furred, feathered and finned friends!

Los Gatos' Faith Lutheran Church will hold a blessing of the animals and healing service on Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. Led by the church's pastor, the Rev. Cork Kallas, the service takes place outside the church, at 16548 Ferris Ave.

Although this type of service is common in Catholic churches - St. Francis of Assisi being the patron saint of animals - it's not as common in Protestant ones. However, Lutherans also hold Francis as a saint; hence, this event! Church membership is not required to attend. Likewise, all well-behaved animals are welcome, including dogs, cats, birds, rodents and reptiles. For directions to the church, call 408.356.5055.

Next up, on Oct. 15, is a class called "Hopping Animals" at the Wild Bird Center of Los Gatos, 792 Blossom Hill Road, in the King's Court Shopping Center. Held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and geared toward 3- to 5-year-olds, the class teaches all about animals that hop and includes a story and a frog mask art project. The same class repeats on Oct. 22 from 4 to 5 p.m. for kids 6 and older. The cost is $7 per child. To reserve a spot, call 408.358.WILD.

Speaking of birds, the Los Gatos Public Library has an ongoing program called "Mother Goose Storytime" every Monday at 9:45 a.m. for 1- to 2-year-olds. Toddler storytime (ages 23) takes place Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m., with preschool storytime (ages 35) at the same time slot but on Tuesdays. Stories for all ages, read by volunteer "library grandparents," take place Mondays through Wednesdays from 3 to 5 p.m.
