Deliveries to La Rinconada—off Wedgewood or Clearview?

When the planning commission hears La Rinconada Country Club's remodel proposal June 9, some neighbors of the popular golf course and reception spot will be lobbying for a change in where deliveries to the club are made.

According to Rick Forney, La Rinconada general manager, the proposal would trigger a change in the club's use permit—a change Wedgewood Avenue residents see as an opportunity to move delivery traffic off of their street.

But others will be at the meeting, too, opposing any change to the current delivery route.

The club, which guests enter from the upscale neighborhood of Clearview Drive, currently receives deliveries through a back entrance off of Wedgewood Avenue. Wedgewood residents say the wider, less-traveled Clearview Drive makes more sense for deliveries, since Wedgewood and the even narrower Wimbledon Drive are already used by delivery trucks going to nearby stores. They say Wedgewood is deteriorating in quality, and has become a potential hazard.

"The street is very unsafe because it's all unimproved and there's nowhere to walk," neighborhood resident Chris Delaossa said. "The streets up where Clearview is are clearly wider, safer, unused streets that can handle the few trucks they have up there."

Delaossa said deliveries were made through the Clearview entrance—which he said is about 10 feet wider than the Wedgewood gate—until Clearview residents lobbied for a change in 1988. That wasn't much of a problem until new development and traffic rerouting added a much higher volume of vehicles. Now, neighbors say cars often get backed up on the street while waiting for large trucks to turn into the relatively narrow delivery entrance.

But Clearview residents want deliveries to continue using that entrance. Reza Soliman-Noori said his street is not suitable for delivery trucks.

"It's not zoned for delivery traffic," he said. "There's no line in the middle of the street. If you look at Wedgewood, there are four or five stop signs, a stop light, and a double line in the middle of the street."

Which entrance delivery vehicles use makes no difference to the country club, Forney said, and the town government will make that decision, anyway.

"It doesn't matter what gate our deliveries come in," he said. "It's like carrying your groceries in through the front door or the back door."

That "back door," though, is already used quite a bit, Wedgewood resident Mark Medalie said.

"With the announcement that there's going to be more construction up there, now we're not only having beer and food trucks going up there, we're going to have construction trucks," Medalie said. "We have so much traffic already that is not only going to the golf course, but to the Safeway shopping center. Wouldn't it be better for balance that delivery trucks going to La Rinconada use Clearview?"

Soliman-Noori said the country club gets so few deliveries—about 31 per week, according to Forney—that it will not change much to move the deliveries. And others say delivery trucks would threaten the safety of Clearview and the nearby La Rinconada Drive.

"The Clearview Drive and La Rinconada Drive residents purchased their homes to live on quiet residential streets," Clearview resident Laurie Garvey said in an e-mail to the Los Gatos Weekly-Times. "The residents and their children can walk on these streets in relative safety at the present time."

According to Delaossa, Wedgewood residents have the same concern for their street.

"We just have the worst roads, and the most dangerous for kids," he said.

The planning commission will meet at 7 p.m. June 9 in the town council chambers at 110 E. Main St.
