Los Gatos firefighters will soon be standing on street corners, holding their boots out and asking for money.
No, the Santa Clara County Fire Department isn't laying them off—they're asking passersby to "Fill the Boot" for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
According to Randy Breen, MDA's San Jose district director, about 10 or 12 county firefighters from Los Gatos will volunteer their free time on two upcoming Saturdays to collect donations for the organization. They will stand at the intersection of N. Santa Cruz Avenue and Los GatosSaratoga Road on June 12 and 19 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Funds raised from the effort will allow children with muscular dystrophy to attend Camp Harmon, an Easter Seals-owned site in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The children, many of whom cannot walk without assistance, attend camp for one week and participate in a variety of activities with the help of caregivers.
"It's the one week out of the entire year that kids with MD get to be normal kids, without feeling like they're different," Breen said. "They go to camp, go swimming, go on nature rolls and participate in crafts and games they normally don't have a chance to do."
He said the organization has set a goal of $7,500 for this year's event.
