Horton hatches a win for the Giants

Matt Horton was a force to be reckoned with last Saturday. The Los Gatos Little League hurler threw a complete game, including four shutout innings, to lead the Giants to a 6-4 victory over the Astros on June 5 in the second week of the major division playoffs.

Nick Labombarda ripped a triple and had three RBIs for the Giants.

Tim Garvey pitched three shutout innings for the Red Sox to help them to a 3-2 win over the Orioles on Friday.

The Giants dropped one to the Diamondbacks 9-7 on June 3. Chase Svenson fanned nine batters in his complete-game victory. Svenson also helped him cause by scoring two runs, while Jake Raynaud belted a double and a triple and scored twice.

The A's and the Yankees also met on Thursday, with the Yanks rolling to a 12-2 victory. Michael Hodgman took the mound for the Yanks, throwing four shutout innings in his complete game. He got some help at the plate from his teammates with five players combining for 11 of the 12 runs scored. Ryan Martin stood out with a double, two singles and three runs scored on the day. Ronan Hayes, C. Hernandez, Gavin Honda and Vincent Augustine each crossed the plate twice.

On June 2 the Red Sox topped the Tigers 8-7, despite a strong showing by John Williams of the Tigers. Williams crushed a home run and had three RBIs, but was not able to help his team to a victory. David Picone of the Red Sox had three hits, while Keith Brassil scored twice. Garvey scored three times in the win.

The Reds took one from the Cubs 4-1 thanks to an impressive pitching performance by Jason Shepardson. Shepardson threw a complete game, striking out 14 and not giving up a single walk. Nathan Fumia scored twice for the Reds and Joey Vizzusi drove in two runs.

The Cardinals defeated the Astros 10-8 on June 1 while the Royals took one from the Orioles 9-2. Royals pitcher Cody Nez threw a complete game, fanning 12 batters. Peter Danna had three RBIs while R. Thomas and Kyre Vega both scored twice. Orioles pitcher Haydan Hibbard left five batters standing at the plate on strikes in only 4 1/3 innings, but was not able to get a win.

The Tigers defeated the A's 6-0 on May 28 and the Reds topped the Giants 17-8 the same day. The Reds had quite a day at the plate, with Vizzusi, Alex Hamacher and Shepardson all blasting home runs in the victory. Aaron Aguiar drove in two runs.

On May 27 the Cuts topped the Astros 9-3 and the Red Sox beat the Royals 5-1. Brendan Crane threw three perfect innings for the Sox, fanning six. Garvey also topped the hill for three innings and zipped it past five batters. Picone helped out the offense by scoring twice.

The Tigers beat the Orioles 10-9 on May 26. Mike Mitchell had four base knocks and scored four times for the Tigers, with Williams on the hill. Williams fanned five batters in two innings pitched and drove in four runs and scored twice in the win.

Corey Lanagan of the Orioles threw six innings and left nine batters at the plate on strikes. Hibbard scored three times and Bryan Houp ripped three hits, but could not get a win for the O's.

The Cardinals fell to the Reds 12-4 thanks to Shepardson and Anthony on the hill. Shepardson struck out six in two innings, while Anthony fanned two in one inning. Shepardson also had three hits, three RBIs and scored three times for the Reds. Fumia had two RBIs, while Vizzusi, Hamacher and Kevin Brogan all scored twice.

On May 25 the Diamondbacks topped the Astros 9-4 with Robbie Dunne striking out seven batters in six innings pitched. C. Horn contributed with four hits and three scored runs. Natalie Gibbens helped her team with two hits, while Patrick Shultz was a home run away from completing the cycle with a triple, a double and a single for the D'Backs.

The Yankees stole one from the Royals 4-3 thanks to Honda's pitching, going six innings and fanning seven batters. Martin also helped with a double and two singles for the Yanks. Vega threw three shutout innings for the Royals, but was not able to stop the Yanks.

The Red Sox defeated the A's 4-1 on May 24 with Crane throwing seven strikeouts and three shutout innings. Garvey also fanned seven and helped on offense with two singles, a double and two runs scored for the Sox.

The Cubs toppled the Giants 12-1 with Josh Yun standing out at the plate for the Cubbies with two jacks and a double.

The round robin tournament is set to end on June 9 and a double-elimination tournament will take place on June 12 to decide who has the rights to the LGLL World Series.
