Los Gatos, Pioneer teaming up to host annual basketball camp

Los Gatos and Pioneer high schools are going into business together—or at least they are this summer when they co-host the Mustang/Wildcats Summer Basketball Camp.

With the Los Gatos gym under construction, head basketball coach Jim Marino is teaming up with Pioneer coach Joe Berticevich to host a camp for boys ages 7­15 at Pioneer, 1290 Blossom Hill Road in San Jose.

The camp will run June 21­25, 9 a.m.­noon for players ages 7­12 (cost $115) and 1­3 p.m. for players ages 13­15 (cost $80), and will emphasize fundamentals in shooting, passing, dribbling, defense and team play. Each camper will receive a T-shirt, and there will be individual competitions and prizes on the last day of the camp.

Marino is a former Pioneer basketball coach and Berticevich is a former Los Gatos basketball coach.

Wrestling camp

The 15th annual Wildcat Wrestling Camps for Kids will be held in July in the wrestling room at Los Gatos High School. The focus of the camp will be on fundamentals and wrestling skills.

Session No. 1 for beginners to intermediates ages 7­12 will be held July 12­16; Session No. 2 for intermediates in grades 6­9 will be held July 19­23; and Session No. 3 for advanced wrestlers in grades 8­12 will be held July 26­30. Camp hours are 1:30­4:30 p.m. daily and the cost is $110.

Los Gatos varsity wrestling coach Scott Downs is the camp director and among the instructors will be Fisher head coach Jim Doss and former Los Gatos wrestling standout Richard Escobar.

Boys basketball

A Saratoga basketball camp for boys will be held June 14­17 for grades 9­12, June 21­24 for grades 6­8 and July 12­15 for grades 3­6. Morning and afternoon sessions will be available. Field hockey camp

The fifth annual Del Mar girls field hockey camp for beginning players in grades 5­9 will be held June 21­24 on the Del Mar High School campus. The cost is $50 per player for the camp that runs 9 a.m.­noon. Equipment will be provided. Girls soccer camp

Basketball camp

The Phil Johnson Spartan Basketball Camp will be held June 21­24, 9 a.m­3 p.m. each day, at San José State University for boys ages 8­18. The cost of the camp is $200 and includes a camp T-shirt.

The camp will provide instruction in individual techniques and fundamentals, team play and developing a winning attitude.

Garcia camp

The Jeff Garcia Football Camp for Kids will be held June 15­16, 7:30 a.m.­1 p.m. each day, at Valley Christian High School, 100 Skyway Drive in San Jose. The camp is open to boys and girls ages 9­13.

The camp fee is $150 and includes a camp T-shirt. The camp will be non-contact and full controlled, and will cover basic skills and fundamentals. Former San Francisco 49er and current Cleveland Browns quarterback Jeff Garcia will lead the camp.

Special teams clinic

The West Valley Pop Warner football organization, formerly Los Gatos Pop Warner, will hold a free special teams clinic on July 31, 1­5 p.m., at the Campbell Community Center. The clinic is open to players ages 7­15 and will be presented by San José State University and West Valley College instructors.

Del Mar camp

The Del Mar Youth Football Camp for players ages 9­13 will be held June 14­18, 9 a.m.­4 p.m. each day, at Del Mar High School, 1224 Del Mar Ave. in San Jose.

The non-contact camp will stress the fundamentals of football. The cost is $150 per player ($125 each for two or more campers from the same family) and includes the camp, a T-shirt, lunch and end of camp awards.

Warriors camp

The Golden State Warriors will host a basketball camp for boys and girls ages 8­16 of all skill levels and abilities on July 26­30 at West Valley College in Saratoga.
