Like many ancient cultures, the Navajo people expressed themselves and shared life's myths, history and culture through woven blankets and rugs. Teec Nos Pos: A Navajo Tradition showcases 22 pieces from the collection of Ruth K. Belikove at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles June 15 through August 15 in downtown San Jose.
The show explores the regional style of weaving called "Teec Nos Pos"--which in Navajo means "trees in a circle"--while offering a rare glimpse at a complex collection.
Elaborate designs contained by wide and detailed borders are the signature markings of these dramatic rugs. Also known for its shape, the Teec Nos Pos style runs longer than its width and usually combines colors from a simple color palette. Neutral shades of black, white and beige are marked by surprise accents of jewel tones.
An opening reception with Belikove will be held at the museum on June 20, 24 p.m. The reception is open to the public and is included with the price of admission.
The San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, located at 110 Paseo de San Antonio, is open Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and students; admission for children is free. Call 408.971.0323 for more information.
