What do Major League baseball players do when their playing days are through? Well, if they're anything like Roger Samuels and Ernie Broglio, they end up helping youngsters learn more about the game.
That's what the two former big league hurlers will be doing this summer when South Bay Baseball returns to the diamond for its annual Camp With the Pros series. But something new has been added to the program in 2004 for campers ages 713.
Two sessions of a games camp will be held July 1216 and July 2630 at the Union Little League field, located near the intersection of Camden Avenue and Blossom Hill Road. The cost is $79 per camper and camp hours are 1:304 p.m. each day. Players will receive batting and pitching practice during games pitched by coaches.
Regular baseball camps will be held Aug. 913 at the Union Little League field and Aug. 1620 at the Lincoln Glen Little League, Bird and Pine avenues in San Jose. The cost is $129 per camper and camp hours are 9 a.m.1 p.m. each day.
Instructors include camp director Roger Samuels, a former pitcher for the San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates; Mark Cummins, a former professional infielder and the longtime head baseball coach at Live Oak High School; and Ernie Broglio, a 20-game winner for the St. Louis Cardinals.
