Funds from bandstand celebration will support local nonprofit groups
By Jennifer McBride
Boogieing, barbecuing and live bands will all be part of the Los Gatos Community Foundation's second annual Bandstand Celebration, coming up on Aug. 28 at Oak Meadow Park.

The Los Gatos Community Foundation has been around since 1991. According to marketing representative Darrell Monda, the organization's main purpose is to aid local nonprofit organizations.

"The Community Foundation acts as an umbrella nonprofit, identifying community needs and mobilizing private and public support to fund those needs," Monda says. "Nonprofit organizations can use our tax ID number—our 501(c)3—to be able to operate in nonprofit status so that contributions people make to their causes are tax deductible." For example, says Monda, the Millennium Foundation and the new community swimming pool are both projects that benefit from association with the Community Foundation.

Monda says construction of the town's bandstand was completed last August and cost about $650,000. In order to raise some money to offset that price tag, the Community Foundation sold bricks that buyers could personalize, allowing them to have a timeless commemoration in the town. Monda says the sale was successful, with more than 800 bricks purchased by residents.

Last year's Bandstand Celebration, the first ever held, was a big success and appeared to be a fun time for all who attended, says Monda. This year, with the theme "Barbecue and Boogie," he says the Community Foundation hopes to sell at least 400 tickets. The event includes live music by popular local cover band Mack the Knife, dinner catered by local restaurant CB Hannegan's, and a treasure-chest prize giveaway and silent auction.

Monda adds that although the Community Foundation has already turned the deed for the bandstand over to the town, money is still owed for its construction. The foundation hopes to raise additional funds that will help pay off that debt through entries for the prize giveaways.

The second annual Bandstand Celebration Barbecue and Boogie will take place on Aug. 28 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Oak Meadow Park. Tickets are $65 per person, or $125 per couple, and are on sale now.
