Art lovers who attend the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles benefit auction Nov. 13 will have a lot of choices to make, from the opportunity to bid on more than 100 quilts and textile artworks, to an array of other art items and gifts. Auction guests can even find tools that will help them plan their own works of art, should inspiration strike them.
And this event seems sure to inspire, with a wide variety of fine-art quilts and textiles, from experimental to historical. Works to be auctioned include a sculpture by artists Mary Thomas, Rachel Clark and Valerie Manke that takes its inspiration from the unique, colorful clothing of the women of Southwest Africa's Herero tribe. Also set to go on the block is Lighthearted, a quilt by award-winning artist and teacher Therese May, with machine quilting by Jenny Michael, that features an appliqué quilting technique and incorporates such diverse media as acrylic paint and polymer clay.
Auction guests can also shop for wearable art, jewelry, children's items, weekend getaways, gift certificates to local merchants and holiday gifts, as well as quilt books and software that will help them in creating their own textile art. The event includes both live and silent auctions as well as door prizes.
Starting Nov. 3, a preview exhibit offers the public a chance to scope out the works before the auction, and those who wish to can even get a jump on the bidding, with early bids encouraged.
