Efforts to move forward with a Highway 9 improvement project continue to gain momentum, but organizers say they need a little extra help to clear one major hurdle.
The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority has recommended moving forward with the project, which will be proposed to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission this spring. A subcommittee will review applications next month and make recommendations in May or June.
Representatives of the Citizens for Highway 9 Safety group are asking residents to write letters to the commission asking to fund the project. The next opportunity to obtain such funding will not be until 2008.
The proposed project includes the creation of a 4-foot bicycle lane on both sides of the highway, all the way from Los Gatos to Saratoga. A concrete or asphalt curb and a 2- to 4-foot pedestrian sidewalk on one side of the road are also being recommended.
A sample letter is available at www.highway9safety.com, and should be mailed to Doug Johnson, Metropolitan Transportation Commission, 101 Eighth St., Oakland, CA 94607. Letters must be received by Jan. 21. For contact information, including email addresses, of individual commissioners, visit www.mtc.ca.gov/about_mtc/comm
