It's lunchtime. When you have only 30 minutes and a taste for something that won't sit in the stomach for hours on end, a deli sandwich sounds like the best option. The options in town, however, are few: Le Boulanger on Main Street, Sweet Peas and Safeway on
N. Santa Cruz Avenue, or Togo's on Los Gatos Boulevard.
Gurprett Sachdev and Miya Galasauer now have another solution--Subway sandwiches.
On Oct. 12, 2005, the Los Gatos Planning Commission approved a request by Galasauer to open a Subway on N. Santa Cruz Avenue, across from the Department of Motor Vehicles. On Feb. 8, the commission also approved Sachdev's request to open a Subway on Los Gatos Boulevard.
The Subway on the boulevard will neighbor Starbucks in Gateway Plaza; town staff stated in its report that the fast-food restaurant will add variety to the restaurants that are offered in town, as well as encourage a mix of retail.
Los Gatos business owner Laura Ziffer, who was eating lunch at Sweet Peas on Feb. 16, said there are not enough quality, deli-style restaurants in town. But even though Subway will now be in town, she won't frequent either of the two shops.
"I don't eat those kind of sandwiches," she said. Her favorite fresh, fast-food shop is Blendz on Main Street, which serves sandwiches, wraps and quesadillas.
One of the reasons that Sachdev and her husband, Amrit, opted for the location on Los Gatos Boulevard is to fill a gap.
"There are not many sandwich places over there," she said. "I thought this would cater to the location."
This is the same reason Galasauer gave for opening a Subway on N. Santa Cruz Avenue, across from the DMV.
"There are not enough healthy options around here," she said. She said that the town of Los Gatos was hesitant to allow her to open a shop in town because it is a corporate business--there are 25,000 stores nationwide--but she assured it she will deliver a quality product.
"I don't want to wreck the integrity of the town. I am very proud to be able to do business here," Galasauer said.
Galasauer also has an application pending to open a Subway in Saratoga as well as in San Jose. She has operated a store in Santa Clara for four years, and opened a Baskin-Robbins in Los Gatos on July 15, 2005, at 1444 Pollard Road.
For Sachdev, this is her second Subway. Her first location is on Bascom Avenue in Campbell, and she and her husband have operated it for three years. They have seen profits increase by 30 percent during that time, despite having another Subway just down the street. She says she does not feel threatened by having another store open around the same time as hers.
"It will be a healthy competition," she said. "Plus, people will not want to drive all the way near the DMV if they are so close to our location."
Sachdev said that she wanted to get in the Subway business because it is a healthy option.
"I always like the health-conscious concept, and I realized more and more how much people need this type of option," she said.
The store in the Sarah Center at 540 N. Santa Cruz Ave. will open March 1 and the store at 14777 Los Gatos Blvd. is scheduled to open April 15.
