Kevorkian leads Los Gatos girls to 6-2 win

By Kevin Sparrer

In sports, it's not as important to strike early as it is to strike often, and Madeline Kevorkian of the Los Gatos girls soccer team was definitely striking often last week against Palo Alto.

Kevorkian rallied the Wildcats with three goals in the 6-2 win over Paly on Jan. 23, despite trailing 1-0 at the end of the first half.

Rachelle Comeau and her sister Taylor Comeau each scored goals and Jessica Fee also knocked one past the Viking keeper for a goal.

R. Comeau was the first to strike for Los Gatos, after the Vikings put the ball in the net at the 10-minute mark. R. Comeau took a pass from her sister and smashed it into the net to give the Cats life 59 minutes into the game.

Kevorkian then began her attack, taking a pass from Fee and knocking it into the net only two minutes after R. Comeau.

T. Comeau rode the momentum and took a pass from Brianne Medved, sending it past the Viking keeper at the 66th minute for the third goal for the Cats.

Then Fee followed suit, and on a pass from Susie Brewster crushed a shot into the net for the fourth Los Gatos goal in less than 10 minutes.

Palo Alto attempted a bit of an attack, scoring in the 72nd minute, but Kevorkian went on a rampage and scored at 74 minutes on a pass from Fee and again at the 80th minute on a pass from Allison Arnstein, completing the victory for the Cats.

Though they were not able to score, Krista Wiederhold, Kerry Esrey and Kelly Hoose each played pivotal roles in the win for the Cats.

Los Gatos outshot the Vikings 11-3, making more than half of those attempts.

The win brings Los Gatos to 4-3-1 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League and to 9-7-1 overall.

The Cats were scheduled to face Gunn on Jan. 25, but the game was postponed due to the constant rain and rescheduled for Feb. 4 at 3:30 p.m.

As for this week, Los Gatos will host Monta Vista on Jan. 30 at 3:30 p.m. and then take on Homestead again at home on Feb. 1 at 3:30 p.m.

Monta Vista has been doing well since it last faced the Cats, winning three games and tying one. As it stands, the Matadors will be entering the game 4-0-3 in league, with one of the ties coming against the Cats the last time these two teams faced off.

Boys stop Paly

The Los Gatos boys soccer team also downed Palo Alto on Jan. 23. The male Cats weren't able to score six goals like the girls, but they still came out on top 3-2.

Los Gatos had it all locked up in the first half after scoring all three of its goals and allowing the Vikings only one. Palo Alto attempted a comeback, scoring its second goal in the second half, but was unable to find enough holes in the Los Gatos defense and came up short.

The Cats successfully defended their undefeated record that extended to 5-0-3 in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL.

Kevin Peth scored the first goal for Los Gatos on a pass from Niki Chow, then both Chow and Peth helped Grant James with quick passes and James knocked the ball into the net for the second goal of the game.

Again Chow and Peth combined for an assist to Jared Bernstein who knocked in the winning goal for Los Gatos.

Los Gatos will attempt to retain its perfect record against Saratoga on Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. at the home of the Falcons, who are 2-6 in league, with one of the losses coming against the Cats already this season.
