A lion's den is a dangerous place to be, especially when the lions are well-trained wrestlers.

And when Lincoln played host to the annual Blossom Valley Athletic League wrestling finals last weekend, three of its Lions roared into the top eight in their respective weight classes. Two of the three managed to finish in the top six and qualified to advance to the Central Coast Section tournament.

Nick Pretty, a senior, finished fifth in the 162-pound weight class, defeating Tui James of Independence in his last match.

Pretty lost his second match of the day, and his only match in the consolation bracket, against Frank Phet of Silver Creek on a 7-5 decision. Phet went on to claim fourth place in the weight class. Pretty had his first loss at the hands of Jace Guibor of Branham by fall after only 1:28.

Pretty had defeated James earlier in the day in the second round of the tournament, winning a high-scoring 23-21 decision. His first round win was against Francisco Vargas of Willow Glen by fall in only 20 seconds.

Senior Jacob DeLeon finished in a tie for sixth place with William Hoppner of Prospect in the 142-pound division for the Lions.

DeLeon had two wins in the consolation bracket before his final loss to Steve Castillo of Oak Grove by pin in 46 seconds. The two wins in the consolation bracket were against Darren Gobin of Leigh, 5-4, and Steven Sanchez of Santa Teresa with a 29-second pin. DeLeon's loss in the winner's bracket came against Omar Armenta of Silver Creek by a 12-1 decision. DeLeon's first win was against Andrew Macias of Piedmont Hills with a pin in 1:56.

The other Lion to place was Patrick Yanez, a senior, who was seventh in the 173-pound weight class. Yanez pinned Raymond Martinez of San Jose Academy in 18 seconds in his final bout. Yanez's last match in the consolation bracket was a loss to Tom Swale of Branham by a 14-12 decision. His loss in the winner's bracket came to Caleb Orozco of Overfelt, who eventually went on to become champion in the division, and Yanez's only win in the winner's bracket came when he bested Martinez again in the first round of the tournament by a fall at 1:59.

Both Pretty and DeLeon qualified for CCS and will continue their productive seasons at the tournament set for Feb. 2526 at Overfelt.

Soccer teams win

The Lincoln boys and girls soccer teams each finished the Santa Teresa Division season with victories last week.

Ricky Dorrego knocked in two goals and added an assist and Marcos Medina drilled a pair of goals to lead the Lincoln boys to a 4-3 win over Andrew Hill. Rodolfo Gomez and Luis Reyes also had assists for the Lions.

Lincoln ended the year with a 5-6-1 record in league play and finished 5-10-2 overall.

Marisol Agustinez had a goal and an assist to lead the Lincoln girls to a 2-1 win over Evergreen Valley. The Lions, who lost 5-1 to Overfelt earlier in the week, finished 6-4-4 in the division and 12-4-4 for the year.

Basketball victories

The Lincoln basketball teams both won league decisions over the San Jose Academy last week.

The boys ran their division record to 6-4 and their season mark to 9-12 with a 58-47 win over the Bulldogs. Sophomore Tarik Hakmi supported with 12 points and senior James Perez had 11.

Diego Romero added six points, Justin Weise four, Matt Galindo two and Jeff Herrera one.

The Lions will close out the regular season on the road this week. They were to face Del Mar on Tuesday and will visit Mt. Pleasant on Feb. 18, 7:30 p.m.

The girls, meanwhile, rolled to 57-31 win over San Jose to improve to 8-2 in the division and 13-8 for the year.

Sophomore center Alex Scoffone poured in 19 points, including nine buckets from the floor, to lead Lincoln. Silvia Aguilar and Whitley Davis added 10 points apiece and Kaylin Mitsumori hit nine, including a three-ball. Nancy Adjei supported with nine points and Ashley Guin had one.

The Lions, who were to visit Prospect (7-4, 10-10) on Tuesday, will close out the regular season at home on Feb. 17, hosting first-place Evergreen Valley (11-0, 17-7) at 7 p.m.
