America West plans
to land after curfew
San Jose City Councilman Ken Yeager, who represents District 6, which includes the greater Rose Garden area, is angry about America West airlines' plans to land a flight from Las Vegas at 1:40 a.m.
Yeager issued a statement calling the scheduling of a daily flight a "slap in the face to nearby residents and the spirit of the airport's curfew."
Originally, the airline had planned to use an Airbus 319 aircraft, which would have violated the city curfew, but switched to a 50-passenger regional jet with a noise level low enough to exempt it from curfew restrictions,
"I hope residents will contact America West to protest this flight," Yeager says. "America West needs to know that their backdoor maneuver to get around the curfew is against everything San Jose is doing to give people a good night's sleep during curfew hours."
Yeager wants the airline to reschedule the flight to land before 11:30 p.m.
He is encouraging residents to voice protests by calling 408.693.0800 or emailing the president and CEO at Douglas.Parker@americawest.com. Letters can be sent to Parker at 4000 E. Sky Harbor Blvd., Phoenix, AZ, 85034.

Site for JW House
at Kaiser dedicated
The future site of JW House was dedicated on March 20 at the new Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Santa Clara.
Jan-Willem Knapen, who has inoperable brain cancer, traveled by ambulance from the current Kaiser Hospital to see the site of his dream house dedicated.
The 16-year-old Shasta Hanchett Park resident conceived the idea of a residence for families of long-term patients at Kaiser following conversations with his oncologist, Dr. Alan Wong.
JW, as he is known, started by soliciting funds from friends and family, presenting Wong with an initial donation of $10,000 in May 2004. Since then, some $300,000 has been raised toward a goal of $1.2 million to build, furnish and provide operating costs for the first year of operation.
On March 17, JW and Wong traveled to Sacramento to receive proclamations from the state assembly for their efforts.
